This edition of our blog will explore the use of CBD and its counterparts to help alleviate the symptoms and stunt the progression of one of the most common diseases of our generation.

  • CBD causes cancer cell death without having adverse effects on the healthy cells. 
    • The endocannabinoid system plays a dual role on the regulation of tumor generation and progression, this study focused on the administration of THC and other cannabinoids, which were shown to exert anti-cancer actions, (i.e. tumor cell death) in animal subjects.
    • The total cannabinoid load in this study was shown to enhance the anti-cancer activity of other antineoplastic agents in the animal subjects.
    • The positive results lead to a push for CBD and cannabinoids as anti-cancer agents in phase I/II clinical studies- on human subjects.
    • Cannabinoids have been shown to inhibit tumor angiogenesis- the development of vascular systems, which carry oxygenated blood to the tumors and help them grow.
  • Cannabidiol and its counterparts have been found to reduce pain from cancer treatments, vomiting, and may help appetite. 
    • An excerpt from Science Directs’ recent case study has proven that “In a cancer context, cannabinoids have been shown to alleviate nausea and vomit induced by chemotherapy (Guzman, 2003Pertwee, 2009) and several cannabinoid-based medicines [Marinol (THC) and Cesamet(nabilone, a synthetic analogue of THC)] are approved for this purpose. Cannabinoids also inhibit pain, and Sativex (a standardized cannabis extract) has been approved in Canada for the treatment of cancer-associated pain. Other potential palliative effects of cannabinoids in oncology include appetite stimulation and attenuation of wasting (Pertwee et al., 2010).”
  • CBD increases tumor cell’s sensitivity to radiation therapy.
    • This exhaustive study showed that CBD used in conjunction with radiation therapy caused a significant uptick in the sensitivity of cells to succumb to the effects of the radiation treatment.
  • Cannabinoids help slow tumor growth in pancreatic cancer – they effectively increased tumor cell death and invasion of more, healthy cells.
    • This particular study was born of a lack of cannabidiol being studied as an anti-cancer agent rather than just in the interest of the treatment of chemotherapy-related side effects.
    • The study found that “CBD in particular increases the susceptibility of tumor cells to the lymphokine-activated killer cells, which can result in cell lysis.”
    • The study also heavily demonstrated a propensity to focus on CBD rather than THC; it was determined that: “Dominant CBD strains are more suitable for applications in relieving spasms and pain, psychosis, anxiety, inflammation, and some other conditions, with lesser effects on lethargy and lower likelihood of causing dysphoria. It can be of value in treating depression and some side effects that result from cancer treatment. Overall, CBD is preferred for medical applications and has fewer health risks compared with THC and is useful in negating some of the adverse effects of THC.”

 

Does CBD cure cancer? No, but the science shows it does kill cancer causing cells, make them more sensitive to radiation treatment, stop them from creating a vascular system, and help alleviate the symptoms of these harsh treatments- improving  overall health and quality of life. #cancersucks but living with it doesn’t have to.
